Dr. Kristiina Vuori is President and CEO of Sanford Laboratories for Innovative Medicines, a not-for-profit biomedical research institution launched in 2023 with a mission to discover and deliver the next-generation of molecular medicines. Dr. Vuori is also Professor and Pauline & Stanley Foster Distinguished Chair at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP), where she directs a cancer research laboratory. Prior to helping launch Sanford Labs, Dr. Vuori held several leadership roles at SBP, including serving as President of the Institute in 2010-2022 and Director of SBP’s National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in 2005-2013. As a cancer researcher, Dr. Vuori is recognized for delineating molecular pathways that regulate cancer cell survival, metastasis and drug responsiveness. She has published >100 research articles and received numerous research awards from the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Department of Defense, Stand Up to Cancer Dream Team, and California Cancer Research Programs. Dr. Vuori is a PEW Biomedical Scholar and an elected member of the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Vuori serves on several scientific advisory and review boards. She also serves or has served on the governing boards of American Association for Cancer Research, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, California Breast Cancer Research Program, and publicly traded companies Bionano Genomics, Sio Gene Therapies, Forian, Inhibrx and WebMD. Dr. Vuori earned her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at University of Oulu, Finland. ollowing her internship and residency, she completed a research fellowship at SBP (then La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation) before joining the faculty of the Institute’s National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center.
